Ein Ort des Handelns
Nach beinahe 70 Jahren seit ihrer Gründung ist die Filmakademie Wien als innovative Aus- und Fortbildungsstätte für Film- und Fernsehschaffende nicht mehr wegzudenken. Ihr gelingt es, bewährte Methoden der Vermittlung mit dem steigenden Bedarf der Interdisziplinarität in Einklang zu bringen und sich so den ständig neuen Herausforderungen zu stellen. Dabei steht die individuelle, kreative Entwicklung der Studentinnen und Studenten im Vordergrund, die entlang filmkunsthandwerklicher Ausbildung gefördert wird.
Der internationalen Anerkennung von den derzeit Lehrenden (Barbara Albert, Wolfgang Murnberger, Michael Kitzberger, Christine A. Maier, Götz Spielmann u.a.) folgen zahlreiche Auszeichnungen und Preise von Studierenden. So werden die Werke der Studierenden regelmäßig bei renommierten Filmfestivals wie der Diagonale oder dem Filmfestival Max Ophüls Preis gezeigt und ausgezeichnet, bei den BAFTA Student Awards nominiert, oder erhalten Student Academy Awards und den Österreichischen Filmpreis sowie den wichtigsten deutschsprachigen Nachwuchspreis, den FIRST STEPS Award. Einladungen an renommierte Filmfestivals wie z.B. an das Festival de Cannes, das Locarno Film Festival, die Internationalen Filmfestspiele Berlin oder das Montréal World Film Festival zeugen von der hohen Qualität der studentischen Werke.
Die laufenden Herausforderungen, die einem selbst gern als unüberwindlich erscheinen, sind sicherlich vom medialen Wandel im digitalen Kontext geprägt. Bereits mehr als ein Drittel der Filmbilder, die uns erreichen, sind durch moderne Technologien bearbeitet worden und führen stellenweise zu einer vielfältigeren Form des klassischen Erzählens. An der Filmakademie Wien ist der strukturelle Fortschritt, der Kino und Fernsehen gleichermaßen erfasst hat, ebenso bedeutend und herausfordernd in der Vermittlung von Wissen und Handwerk.
Die Filmakademie Wien ist ein Ort des Handelns. Mit einer ausgeprägten Produktionsstruktur, von Technik bis Studio, bewältigt sie eine hohe Zahl von Praktika, führt zu intensiver Teambildung und zu notwendigen Erfahrungen des Filmemachens in allen Bereichen. Der Übungscharakter soll Freiräume ermöglichen, die Fachbereiche sind hier beratend involviert, und das Betreuungsverhältnis von etwa 1:4 zwischen Lehrenden und Studierenden sorgt für die entsprechende Intensität des Austausches. Neben dem künstlerischen Produktionsbetrieb mit dem Fokus auf Entwicklung und Erschließung der Künste, sind auch Theorie und Forschung ein jüngerer Bestandteil des Instituts.
Ein erheblicher Vorteil der Filmakademie Wien ist die Einbettung in eine Reihe von anderen Instituten der mdw – Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien. So können Synergien zwischen Schauspiel, Musik und Komposition genauso genutzt werden, wie zB. die Nachbarschaft zur Elak – Institut für Komposition, Elektroaukustik und TonmeisterInnen-Ausbildung an unserem Standort, dem Future Art Lab am Anton-von-Webern-Platz.
A place of action
Nearly seventy years after its founding, the Film Academy Vienna, as an innovative institution for the training and continuing education of film and television professionals, has become an integral component of the film sector. The Academy succeeds in aligning proven teaching methods with the increasing need for interdisciplinarity and is thus able to meet the ever-changing challenges of the field. The focus here is on the individual, creative development of the students, which is promoted through a curriculum emphasising filmmaking as a craft.
Not only does the Academy boast an internationally renowned teaching staff (including Barbara Albert, Wolfgang Murnberger, Michael Kitzberger, Christine A. Maier, Götz Spielmann) ; its students are also the recipients of numerous honours and awards. Students’ works are regularly screened and honored at prestigious film festivals such as the Diagonale and the Max Ophüls Preis Film Festival, nominated for the BAFTA Student Awards, and awarded Student Academy Awards, the Austrian Film Award, and the most important German-language award for emerging talent, the FIRST STEPS Award. Invitations to prestigious film festivals such as the Festival de Cannes, the Locarno Film Festival, the Berlin International Film Festival, or the Montréal World Film Festival attest to the high quality of the students’ work.
The constantly evolving, often seemingly insurmountable challenges are certainly influenced by the media transformations with regard to digitalisation. Already, over a third of the film material submitted to us has been edited using modern technologies, often resulting in a more multi-faceted form of the classic narrative. At the Film Academy Vienna, the structural progress that has taken hold in both cinema and television is just as important and challenging in conveying knowledge and skills.
The Film Academy Vienna is a place of action. With an extensive production structure, from technology to the studio, it handles a large number of internships and promotes concentrated team-building and gathering the necessary experience in all areas of filmmaking. The Academy’s exercise character is aimed at providing freedom; the individual areas of study have an advisory function in this regard, and the teacher-student ratio of about 1:4 ensures a correspondingly intense exchange. In addition to the artistic production operation with a focus on the development and appreciation of the arts, theory and research represent a younger component of the Department.
A significant advantage of the Film Academy Vienna is its integration into a number of other departments at the mdw – University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. In this way, synergies can be utilised not only between acting, music, and composition but also, for example, through the Academy’s proximity to the ELAK – Department of Composition, Electroacoustics and Tonmeister Education at our location, the Future Art Lab at Anton-von-Webern-Platz.
