Viennese Journey into Direct Sound 2026 – Phase 2

Phase 2: THE LOCAL PULSE | The Community Anchor of Soundscopia Vienna (*)

Welcome to the epicenter of the Austrian sonic landscape. While our autumn Summit charts the broader European horizon, Phase 2: The Local Pulse is where the immediate heartbeat of our industry thrives. Through targeted monthly gatherings right here in Vienna, this initiative serves as the ultimate community anchor—keeping our professional network tightly connected while actively driving the future of filmmaking.

This season, we are placing a powerful focus on the next generation of filmmakers through two core pillars:

  • Young Austrian Cinema: We are breaking down silos by directly bridging the gap between emerging directors and sound teams. By fostering collaboration early in the creative process, we ensure that audio is integrated as a core narrative engine from day one, rather than left as a post-production afterthought.
  • Practitioner Spotlights: Seasoned local technicians step up to share raw „war stories“ and critical problem-solving tactics from recent film sets. This provides younger professionals and peers with invaluable, real-world blueprints for troubleshooting on set.

(*) Finding North by Sound: The SOUNDSCOPIA Manifesto

What began as „The Viennese Journey into Direct Sound“ now launches as the Soundscopia movement. On the eve of its 100th anniversary, direct sound is ready to break free from the antechamber of cinema. Soundscopia is the essential annual pilgrimage for a cinema sculpted by its very sonic soul—where pristine acoustics meet the intangible power of artistic resonance.

Forget the conventional red carpets, celebrity gossip, and distribution deals of mainstream festivals. For the working filmmaker—specifically the Direct Sound Designer, Production Sound Mixer, and Microphonist (Boom Operator)—Soundscopia stands alone as the ultimate spiritual home of the craft. It is a global symposium where technology, philosophy, and the art of vibration converge with a sound-attuned audience.

The Primacy of DIRECT SOUND: The Great Inversion

Soundscopia flips the traditional film hierarchy. Here, the director and lead actor share the stage with the masters of the microphone. We champion the authenticity and transcendence of direct sound against standardized, synthetic languages. To listen to direct sound is to hear the world’s pulse, to document society through its deepest vibrations, and to open the field to the FLINTA voices and ears redefining our relationship with the sensible. Welcome to the liberated world of resonance.
